Stages

  • Deep ploughing of land in February-March
  • Harrowing 2-3 times after deep ploughing
  • Cleaning of farm land before sowing
  • Crop rotation with leguminous crops
  • Furrow orientation as per recommended spacing (Spacing on 3x1, 3x1.5, 4x1 feet in rainfed; on 5x1, 4x1.5 feet in irrigated condition)
  • Select good short duration varieties cotton for cultivation
  • Make seed treatment with Azatobacter @ 25 gm/kg and PSB @ 20 gm/kg seed at the time of cotton sowing
  • Maintain plant population of 11000-14000 plants per acre
  • Application of FYM / compost 5 t per hectare every year + 50 % Recommended Dose of fertiliser or Cotton crop should be manured with FYM or compost at least once in 3 years at the rate of 12 to 15 tons/ha.
  • Based on soil testing use chemical fertilizer as per recommended dose of fertiliser (RDF) (Rainfed: NPK ratio of 120:62:62 Kg/ Ha; Irrigated: 150:75:75)

    • Urea+SSP+MoP=260+390+104 (Rainfed); 325+269+125 (Irrigated) Kg hectare
    • 18:46:0/DAP+ Urea +MoP=136+207+104 Rainfed; 125+262+124 (Irrigated) Kg hectare
    • 10:26:26 + Urea=240+208 Rainfed; 289+263(Irrigated) Kg hectare.

  • Application of Nitrogen after 30 days after sowing
  • Use of micronutrients based on soil testing:- Use micronutrients through soil Zinc@ 5%; ferrous@ 2%; Boron@ 1%; copper@ 0.5%; Magnesium@ 1%

  • For Micronutrients deficiency
    • Nitrogen deficiency: Take 1% Foliar spray(100gm in 10 lit of water)
    • Phosphorus deficiency: Take foliar spray of 2% DAP (2 Kg in 10 lit of water)
    • Potassium deficiency: Take foliar spray of 0.5% Potassium nitrate (13:0:45) @50 gm in 10 lit of water.
    • Magnesium deficiency: Take foliar spray of 0.5% magnesium sulphate @50 gm in 10 lit of water
    • Zinc deficiency: Take foliar spray of 0.5% Zinc sulphate @ 50 gm in 10 lit of water.
    • Boron deficiency: Take foliar spray of 0.5% borax @ 50 gm in 10 lit of water.

  • Spraying of 2% DAP+0.6% MgSo4 at the time of flowering and boll development stage gave 10 to 20% for higher seed cotton yield as well as to avoid reddening of cotton.
  • Use of Integrated Pest Management
    • Aphid: Avoid excessive use of nitrogen; Intercropping of trap crop like Cowpea
    • Jassid: Avoid excessive use of nitrogen; Use of light traps
    • Thrips: Spray 5% NSKE
    • Whitefly: Install yellow sticky pans @ 50 numbers per hactare
    • Mealybug: Destroy weeds & host of mealybug near cotton field; Spray Verticilium lecani @ 75gm/ Thiomethoxam @ 45 ml per 15 lit of water
    • Pink bollworm: Border planatation of refuge/ no Bt cotton; Use of pheromones trap @4-5 number / ha for monitoring of PBW

  • Identification of Pest and Natural enemies
    • Sucking insect pest: Aphid,Jassid,Thrips,Whitefly and Mealybug
    • Bollworms: American bollworm, Spotted bollworms,Pink bollworm and Spodoptera/leaf eating catterpiller
    • Natural Enemies: Coccinellids,Crysoperla&spider

  • Spray of Azadiractin 300 ppm @ 5 ml/L, 10000 ppm @ 1 ml/lit or 1500 ppm @ 2.5 ml/L of water for management of sucking pest.
  • Close monitoring for management of disease like Grey mildew, Alternaria, Bacterial blight
  • Use of marigold trap crop for management of cotton bollworms

  • Spraying of pesticide based on pest ETL(ETLs of sucking pest)
    • Jassid: 1-2 nymphs or Jassid /leaves
    • Thrips: 10 thrips /leaf or 15-20% infested plant
    • Aphid: 15-20% infested plant, Whiteflies: 8-10 adults or 20 nymphs /leaf
    • Mealybug: 10% infested plants or at least one stem colonised with mealybug
    • Pink bollworm: 10% or more of attacked bolls

  • Recommended pesticides
    • Aphid: Spray 5% NSKE / Acitamiprid 20% SP@ 6gm per 15 lit of water
    • Jassid: Spray Thiomethoxam 25% @ 6gm per 15 lit of water
    • Thrips: Spray Trizophos 10% @ 30ml per 15 lit of water
    • Whitefly: Spray 5% NSKE
    • Mealybug: Spray Verticilium lecani @ 75gm/ Thiomethoxam @ 45 ml per 15 lit of water
    • Pink bollworm: Take spray of Quinolphos@ 25% EC@ 20 ml or Chloropyriphos 25% EC@ 20 ml or Thiodicarb75% WP @ 20 gm or Fenvelerate 20% EC @ 10 ml or Cypermethrin 10EC@ 10 ml per 10 litre of water.

  • Banned pesticides listed in Stockholm convention and Annexure A & B of WHO should not be used
  • Pesticide application should be skilled & be above 18 years, not pregnant or nursing in case of female
  • Keep weed free cotton field for early 60 days
  • Use of cycle hoe for weeding for drudgery reduction
  • Make 2-3hoeing at 15 to 20 days interval by bullock drawn implements for removing weeds, aeration and to check evaporation
  • Use of environmentally safe weedicide in cotton during continuous rainy days and labour un-availability
  • Minimum two protective irrigation if water is available
  • Give alternate furrow irrigation to irrigated cotton
  • Conserve/percolate rain water in soil and make dead furrow to remove excess rainwater
  • Use of drip irrigation for irrigated cotton cultivation
  • Use of cotton picking coat to reduce drudgery in farm women’s
  • Uprooting of cotton stalks before end of December month to avoid further multiplication of Pink bollworm & mealybug stages.
